  • I've wanted to touch on this subject for a while now and I've had this idea in my head. It's different from my usual work but I've wanted to try more than just aesthetics so I can grow as an artist. For this I choose Marilyn Monroe cuz she is an icon of beauty and someone whose entire past is very tragic. I darkened her skin tone to prove that she is still beautiful despite that and that beauty standards have continually embodied ideals that dont allow for either individuality or racial diversity. In recent times this has changed, but only in some respects. For now we have an even longer list of requirements to be called beautiful when in truth its relative to ur race and preference. Individuality is something emphasized in art as to truly capture someone's appearance u have to include things generally photoshopped in pictures. U want the wrinkles, lack of symmetry, and different skin tones because that's what makes a person recognizable in art ~why then is this not as acceptable in one of the biggest form of modern art: mainstream entertainment media? I used graffiti-like writing for the word 'racism' to signify all ive said about beauty standards and cuz graffiti artists have a history of choosing controversial subjects to represent, therefore the use of that style adds a dichotomy between the 50s beauty standard Monroe and the more freelance street art of relativity recent times. The yellow glow around Monroe is also a tribute to the fact she was said to glow on set. And the general ambiguity of her skintone as a whole is to include all people in the concept of beauty. I know this is not my usual theme, but I think exploring new things is apart of life, thank you for reading all this! Thank you to @mulanrtkiddo for inspiring me to try giving meaning to my artwork and to @0o_mooncat_o0 for encouraging me 🙏
