  • As I stood at the door of the coach, waiting for the station to arrive, staring at the bright lights of the sprawling industrial complexes, I wasn't sure what to expect from this city. But when I stepped down from the train, I was pleasantly surprised to find a platform neat as a button!

Our gracious hosts, who had been waiting for us at the station for two hours, as the train was late, greeted us with lovely rose bouquets at 4:30 in the morning! As we got into the cars and drove towards the hotel, I noticed that the streets too were just as clean.

After rehearsals we had a couple of hours to ourselves. I decided to spend this time wisely(?) and went shopping for Raigarh's famous Kosa Silk handloom sarees and ended up buying 3 absolutely gorgeous pieces.

Then came the time to get ready, which can be a daunting task, at least for me. Make-up is the only thing about dance that I have some aversion to. I have struggled with eyeliners and other things that I can't seem to remember the names of, for as long as I can remember. That's when @priyankapati13 came to my rescue. #shebethesweetest

The theme of our performance was women emancipation and empowerment wherein we depicted the indispensability and supremacy of women for the sustenance of life through the concept of Ardhanarishvara, the difficulties every woman faces in her daily life was explained using the stories of Draupadi, Sita and Ahalya. A woman has to be her own protector, her own saviour, she has to be the Durga to defeat the demons of misogyny, prejudice and chauvinism in the society.

Sitting in the train headed home to Ahmedabad, I look back at the wonderful memories that my first trip to India's eastern part gave me, memories that I'll cherish for a long time to come.
