We missed out on booking the bus that was supposed to take us from Havana to Cayo Santa Maria so we had to hire a guy with a 58 fairlane (I think that’s what it was) to drive the 5 hours there. The car broke down temporarily so it took 7 hours lol. We got hungry along the way so the driver took us to some typical Cuban street food on the side of the toad in a small town on the way.
Our driver was telling us Cubans love pizza so I wanted a Cuban pizza.
The pizza costs 12 CUP, now Cuba has two currencies - CUP (for locals) and CUC for locals and tourists.
I was intrigued by this as it’s such an interesting thing for a country to have. Anyway, 1 CUC equals 25 CUP and 1 CUC is about 1 US dollar. This pizza was 12 CUP lol so about 70 cents Aussie.
The juice was 3 CUP lol.
That street food is the cheapest I have ever bought even compared with Asian/Central and south American countries.

I don’t mind eating street food when travelling as long as it’s cooked in front of me and I have never had a problem. Unfortunately I got a bit too excited with the 15 cent fresh juice and got one. Little did I know it was crushed guava with added tap water to make it drinkable. Local Cubans can handle this fine but I couldn’t and I got sick and had to take antibiotics for 3 days 🤣 that will teach me trying to be a bit healthier, I’ll just stick to the pizza next time 🤨
