  • #IMKONA RECAP:
This is one of my favorite photos from race day. @tiptonjl captured The Coach cheering, pep-talking and paparazzi-ing at about 6 miles into the marathon. I went out way too hot, but decided to try to hang onto my pace for as long as possible. I was either going to blow up and have to walk or end up with a marathon PR. My watch battery died at mile 17.(boo!) I knew I was slowing and it was getting dark. I was really trying to get “home” in under 12 hours but at that point I had no idea where I was as far as pace or overall time. The last four miles were mentally very difficult. When I came down Palani in the last 2K of the run, The Coach caught me again, telling me I was on track for an 11 hour 40-ish minute finish. He started to jog next to me, and I distinctly remember what I said to him: “Go away. I have too much work left to do to get emotional now.” So he peeled off toward the finish and I kept going. ****
It’s a bummer that the finish line is such a fraction of the total time you’re out there in an Ironman, because running down Ali’i toward the red carpet was one of the sweetest feelings of my life. ****
    A few takeaways:
▪️The volunteers and staff in Kona are A+. I can’t even imagine the logistics of putting on a race like this. Mahalo to all of them.
▪️My nutrition plan was solid. No tummy trouble besides a little hunger on the run and general flavor-fatigue.
▪️I had a solid swim time, but while the start line was about 100 meters wide, we were quickly funneled down into a narrow, congested, aggressive lane. I found myself frustrated at not being able to get a full stroke in and spent a lot of energy trying to avoid being kicked in the face and searching for open water. Then we caught the tail end of the men and it got crowded again.
▪️My bike legs need work. I can never put out my target power numbers on race day. 🤷🏼‍♀️
▪️I ended up with a 21-minute PR over my qualifying race, which makes me very happy, and I enjoyed most of the day (besides that last 4 miles). So while I maybe could have raced harder, I would have had different feelings and memories and the ones I have are pretty great!
