  • Ego and training don’t mix!

Here’s a great example of when your ego can get the best of you. Tonight’s programming included “medium” sled pushes for 200m. These two #Marines were partnered up, and didn’t want to stop adding weight!

In the last round, they actually had to give up and roll the weights back rather than push the sled. I guess it’s no big deal, right?

Maybe. But another thing to think about is WHY it is important to stick to a program.

The program is put in place to specifically target certain aspects of your fitness. Yes, we (coaches) always want our athletes to give it their best effort, but that doesn’t always mean maximum effort.

For example, if the program says “bench press at 65% of your max,” there’s a chance that your coach is trying to metabolite focus or work on resensitization (provided that you’re working on hypertrophy). If you select too heavy of a weight, you will not be in the proper rep range and the stimulus will be wrong.

In the grand scheme of things, will this destroy your training? No. But you have to remember that such a large element of what moves us in the gym is mental. For that reason, it’s important that we set ourselves up for success, because losing is not fun. Defeat is not fun. One way we can set ourselves up for success each and every time is following the program!
