Gypsum Museum - Exhibition by Hany Rashed
#OpeningNight on Sunday 25 November at 7 pm, and will run until 10 January 2019 - At Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art, Located in 8 Champollion St., Downtown Cairo

Hany Rashed approaches the subject matter of his artistic practice with a childish perspective, bordering on naivety. He has developed this technique in order to simplify complex issues and to make sense of his surrounding illogical reality; including daily instances and people's reactions to them.

He is not above regarding his artistic formations as toys, and at first glance, the audiences receive them as such, until they start to wander among the imposing creations to discern the layers of meanings they are set to depict.

Rashed chooses this time to play with cars; one of his favorite toys during childhood. For him, they are the best representation of the variety of individuals within a society; for their wide range of models, shapes, colours, age and value. However, unlike the durability of cars, Rashed uses gypsum, a material associated with fragility, to depict human's mortality and vulnerability.

Rashed surveys, in the Gypsum Museum, the models of cars in the Egyptian streets from the 6Os to the present day. The body of work, including stand-alone sculptures and installations, captures the daily overcrowdedness of the Egyptian streets, and concurrently portrays his projections of a fate and destiny that now seems inevitable.
